Prog Rock, Art Rock, whatever you want to call it, has always suffered mightily at the hands of music critics. Genesis, Yes, King Crimson--they never get any respect. But in my critical opinion these bands (for the most part in their early days) created some of the most amazing music ever recorded. In this tradition, follow the Dismemberment Plan. This new album from these former punkers represents a considerable deviation from their original plan. In this sense the title of the Album is an understatement. Change is an impeccably produced concoction of progressive tunes with a tight musicianship in the same vein as The Police, Rush, and at times Dave Matthews. As far as bands from their genre, loose comparisons could be made to Sunny Day Real Estate and Julianna Theory. But rather than taking the aforementioned Pink Floyd meets Led Zeppelin route, the Plan take a more American tack, more of a Talking Heads meets Steely Dan policy. Not an album for casual radio listeners, but a real treat for fans of pretty much any of the bands listed above.
