With his Mercury Prize winning debut Boy In Da Corner still fresh on the minds of awe struck American hip hop fans everywhere, Dylan Mills, aka Dizzee Rascal wastes no time and return to the scene of the the crime with a brand new release. Showtime will, no doubt, prove to the public that even though it's only been eight months between releases, Dizzee still has plenty of worthwhile subjects to get off his chest, and a barrel full of dancehall and two-step beats to go along with it.
The hangover effects of Boy In Da Corner are certainly still lingering, but songs like "Girls" and especially "Stand Up Tall" could send an unsuspecting listener back into a coma if not careful. These tracks pack one hell of a wallop with suicide beats that can't be touched. Production wise they're close to being two of the best rap tracks of the year. The same must be said about "Dream," which definitely feels like a sly wink to Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life" with its child like sensibilities. "Learn" and "Get By" are also equally wonderful with Asian influenced beats heavily soaked throughout.
There are a few missteps on Showtime though that end up making it just a wee bit inferior to Boy In Da Corner. "Hype Talk," with its silly cheerleader type delivery, and "Knock, Knock's" rapping chorus in a knock knock joke style tht get old real fast, and should inspire listeners to hit the next track button to get to greener pastures.
Still and all, Showtime is full of essential listening for hip-hop lovers, and this much is for certain - no one in their right mind can scoff at a man that has released not one, but two of the best rap albums of the year.
