As the recent reissue of his back catalog confirms, whether you love him, hate him, or have never heard of him, the man is without question a prolific songwriting genius and a gifted musician. In twenty-five years he has only produced two substandard records and even they were only bad recordings of good songs. Now, after seven years of lending his considerable skills to other people's records and countless collaborations, When I Was Cruel is an instantly impressive addition to his extensive discography and welcome return. Costello's usual mature and eloquent handling of the nature of human relationships pair once again with Steve Nieve and Pete Thomas of his former backing band The Attractions to craft another consummate volume of fifteen perfect songs. An absolutely essential release.
