Yes, the likable threesome is back with their third effort and this time the message is clearer than ever. This band is as strong as the liquor they're named after. With So Much for the Afterglow, Everclear's caressing vocals, reminiscent of the Beach Boys, and their natural ability to rock, takes you on an emotional ride through well arranged guitar work and drum loops that never seem to bore. The constant echo of excellent harmonies is 200 proof--it'll lift your spirits up a few notches.
The lyrics, courtesy of A.P. Alexakis and Co., are an honest examination of relationships, self-righteousness, and life in general. Hats off to frontman Alexakis, who not only sings lead vocals and plays guitar, but produces this album as well. I don't think it could have been done any better.
Variety guides the well placed tracks with the unique country twang of "Why I Don't Believe in God," and the heavy instrumental, " El Distorto de Melodica." The extra track even contributes to the spirit, with a nice little Christmas ditty to end things.
From their amateurish debut, World of Noise, to a more defined sound on Sparkle and Fade, to the extraordinary, So Much for the Afterglow. It's obvious that Everclear has come a long way. Their sparkle is now gleaming and apparently it's going to be quite a while before we see any evidence of the slightest fade.
