Tirelessly honing their craft with every single release, Austin, Texas' Explosions In The Sky make some of the most bombastic yet beautifully epic Post-Rock in the entire genre. For those that haven't been indoctrinated into the world of Explosions, if you saw the movie Friday Night Lights and wondered what that gorgeous instrumental Rock score was in the background, well, there you go. Some folks out there gripe that Explosions' stuff all sounds alike, but to me that's like saying all Classical music sounds the same; it just isn't true. All Of A Sudden is Explosions' first work since Friday Night Lights and just like their previous work, it's stellar. To me, this kind of music only works if it invokes a spectrum of emotions and over its six lengthy tracks it does just that. Excitement, fear, loneliness and fulfillment are just four of about a hundred different emotions I felt during All Of A Sudden's near 45-minute length. It's even more powerful if you listen to it on headphones or in a pitch-black room staring at a starry night sky.
You don't usually like to single people out in these kinds of groups because it takes a strong collective to make something like this work, but drummer Christopher Hrasky has to be recognized as one of the strongest working today. Anytime his drumming starts up, it's like hearing John Bonham of Led Zeppelin for the first time all over again, he's that good. All Of A Sudden is so close to being a masterpiece, but "What Do You Want To Go Home To?" sounds too similar to the work Moby did on Michael Mann's Heat soundtrack and it's a little too derivative for my liking. Other than that however, this is a monster work and deserves to be mentioned alongside The Shins and Of Montreal as one of the best new albums in last few months.
