Can you believe that over a span of 26 years a band as influential as Fleetwood Mac has only recorded six albums (that is, with their classic line-up that includes Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks)? Plus they've given us nothing new in the 16 years since '87's excellent Tango in the Night.
Oddly enough they break this silence with easily one of their worst songs ever. "What's the World Coming To," makes them sound crabby and old, and Buckingham's voice sounds strained and thin as a reed. Lucky #7 gets off to a rocky start, but it gets a lot better. "Murrow Turning Over in His Grave" brings memories of Tusk, and "Thrown Down" finds Nicks on top of her game. "Miranda" reminds of "Big Love" from the Tango album, and "Red Rover" is almost a carbon copy of "Never Going Back Again" from the classic Rumours. It's clear that this is the Buckingham/Nicks show but that's also my biggest complaint. I want Christine McVie back dammit! Where's the song that sounds like "Oh Daddy?" I know it's a blessing to have Buckingham and Nicks back together again, but it would have been worth a pretty fancy piece of quid to lure Christine back into the fold. Say what you will but she was a large part of the magic and it would have been nice to see them set aside their legendary in-fighting out of respect for their legions of fans.
