In 2004, Franz Ferdinand were the toast of the rock world with their legendarily catchy single "Take Me Out." By the end of 2005, one terribly rushed and forgettable follow-up with not a memorable track to be found just about killed all the momentum that "Take Me Out" rendered. Wisely, Alex Kapranos and company took the last four years off to decide what route they should settle on next and that route has turned into Tonight: Franz Ferdinand which finds the four Scotsmen seemingly refreshed and ready to try and conquer the rock world once again.
The band is banking on Tonight's lead track and first single "Ulysses" to lead them back to the promise land and to their credit, it is better than anything off of You Could Have It So Much Better With. But if they and their label had any brains, their next single should be the obvious party starter "No You Girls" which could end up being a candidate for best dancefloor track of 2009. Tonight: focuses more on dance and electronic beats than the Pop-Punk/Rock style and that can only help curb the stagnant route that Franz Ferdinand were headed towards. But at times, Tonight: falls back into that lull where all the songs start sounding the same. The clever "Bite Hard" and the beat heavy and near eight minute epic "Lucid Dreams" help to cull most of that, but Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, even though it is a solid comeback album, still doesn't quite live up to the promise that their 2004 self-titled debut sold us all on.
