Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power, who consist of the British Electronic/Ambient Noise duo F**k Buttons, do not make music for the masses. Their first LP, 2008's Street Horrrsing (produced with the help of Mogwai's John Cummings) was an abrasive debut that lent more towards noise acts such as Wolf Eyes and Throbbing Gristle than instrumental Post-Rock such as Mogwai. Their newest release Tarot Sport however, (this time with production help from Andrew Weatherall of British down-tempo Electronic act Two Lone Swordsmen) is surprisingly awash in a melodic haze throughout that will have audiences falling over themselves to call this album a true revelation. That, or people will find it completely overrated, simple nonsense. Put me down under the former category, because this album is a real headphone masterpiece.
The overall sound of Tarot Sport is one part Brian Eno Music for Airports, a dash of early era Jean-Michel Jarre, a bit of M83 and a smattering of My Bloody Valentine feedback for good measure. All this makes for layers upon layers of melody mixed with a hint of a noise and drone that is intoxicating on the ears on a great sound system or pair of top notch headphones. Those that like Electronic music more on the Ambient side yet pumped full of steroids will find Tarot Sport to be one of, if not the strongest Electronic album of the year.
