Though this is unquestionably the strongest record nominated, it would certainly be a shock if it wins. You could easily argue that Garbage isn't a female act--but it's the presence of Shirley Manson, their lead singer and garish, sexy clown of a mascot, that is the focal point of the band. She's all but stolen the infamous surname away from Marilyn. Though the band's appearance and image places them the most left of center among these nominees, their music is all smoking fastballs right over the plate. The combination of bitter sweet Beatlesque pop, against the backdrop of edgy guitar and hypnotic techno rhythms packs a hefty hook. Garbage was the year's coolest band. This nomination along with last year's Radiohead nod, are the best evidence that the Grammy's are getting back in touch with music that matters.
