Very few front women have the commanding presence that Shirley Manson possesses. As the voice of the wildly entertaining Garbage, she comes across as both tough and feminine. With only two albums to their credit, Garbage have made quite the name for themselves. The terrific new album Beautiful doesn't exactly find the band breaking new ground. Songs like "Shut Your Mouth" and the single "Androgyny" have a catchy pop sound that are reminiscent of tunes off their previous efforts, but they do experiment a bit. Most notably the winning "Can't Cry These Tears," a sort of ode to The Shirelles. Some moments on Beautiful even remind of The Dandy Warhols, another band that I'm a huge fan of. Beautiful isn't quite as good as Garbage's self titled record or Version 2.0, but it's still an exciting listen and is exactly what the title suggests.
