One would guess by the cover art for Give up the Ghost's that this Bostonian five piece was a whining band, crying about girls, broken hearts and relationships, (the picture on the cover is a bunch of candy hearts arranged in the shape of a big heart) but then I saw the name of the album, We're Down Til We're Underground, and really didn't know what to think.
Give Up the Ghost is a hardcore band that bludgeon the inner-ear with a full metal assault of screaming vocals and guitars that definitely come with some good riffs and hooks. We're Down Til We're Underground has emotionally charged lyrics, not unlike Ensign or Battery which makes it a good combo for any kid from the hardcore scene to listen to who is pissed at his girlfriend, but would rather masturbate with sandpaper than give in to Dashboard Confessional wussdom.
One fifth of the band and one half of the guitar playing is that of former Ten Yard Fight guitarist Tim Cossar. The singing is bellowed out by old Ten Yard Fight roadie Wes Eisold, so if you like Ten Yard Fight or East Coast core you'll like these guys. This album is difinitely worth a couple solid listens, but it gets monotonous after too long, making it a record that I would only bring out every couple of months or so. It tends to wear on your nervous system after more than one spin.
We're Down Till We're Underground has all the trimmings of a standard hardcore album plus a really cool instrumental at the end. It is good to see bands like this still keeping this style of music alive and thriving today. This record though flawed shows a good deal of potential for this puzzled together crew.
