Glassjaw is a Long Island five piece that knocked me out when I saw them live at sno-core in Vegas. I had never heard Glassjaw so I just sat back and let it wash over me like a tidal wave. The power and enthusiasm that singer Daryl Palumbo projected, along with what seemed to be an improv singing style, was captivating. Palumbo and the other
members fed off of each other's energy, and the flames were fanned by the crowd - it was a gnarly show.
Palumbo blasted out on stage screaming and running around like a bull pumped up on roids, being released into the ring at a rodeo, all the while in a Paul Frank shirt. He had great stage sense as well as fashion sense. After witnessing one of the best live shows in my life I walked to the merch booth. As I walked I looked back at where I was standing. The wall behind had my outline burned into it. Glassjaw produces some pretty intense gamma rays live, and the buzz on them is building. At the show I bought Glassjaw's older album Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and proceeded to play the shit out of it for about two years until I bought Worship and Tribute.
The heaviness and originality of Justin Beck and Todd Weinstock's guitar work is extremely awe inspiring, most notably on "Mu Empire" which makes me want to start a band every time I hear it. On "Radio Cambodia" Daryl delivers a song full of painful shards of metal, not only musical but emotional. This is a great song, I usually hit repeat a few times and it's definitely a standout track. "The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports" is an otherworldly fusion of sound, energy and raw talent that is hard to put into words. The song breaks in the middle so that you can hear Palumbo rattle off his lyrics like a horse race announcer, speeding them up as the race nears it's dramatic climax. "Welcome back race fans it's Cavalcade Sports time again here at Jamboree, home of the hit. How ya doing Bob? Last stretch, my heart, my heart stays in the lead." Truly genius composing on this album and, yes, one the best hardcore albums I've heard in ages. If I'm wrong it's because Larry Gorman's concentrated double base drum pounding, has dislodged the objectivity bone in my brain. The enhanced CD includes videos of "Cosmopolitan Bloodless," "Ape Dos Mil," "Must've Run All Day" that are great for all you art-fruits to enjoy. Glassjaw is truly a monumental band and a band that will shape the future of music.
