When Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory started out in 2000 with their debut Felt Mountain, it was a stellar record even though the duo came into the Portishead, Tricky and Black Box Recorder world of trip-hop a little too late. Fast forward to 2003 and their follow-up Black Cherry was as far a departure as you could imagine. Even though Black Cherry has it's fleeting moments of brilliance, it was for the most part a very self conscious record that couldn't decide between the two worlds of downbeat trip-hop and upbeat electro-clash.

Zip ahead a few years, and it finally sounds like Goldfrapp have found their niche. No scratch that, Goldfrapp haven't just found their niche in the world of electro-clash, they've rocketed to the head of the class - blowing past such peers as Miss Kitten and Fischerspooner by a country mile. If you don't get that sudden urge to shake your ass or grind your crotch into your partner, check your pulse because brotha, you're no longer among the quick.

Supernature is infectious from start to finish and comes banging out of the gates with first track and single "Ooh La La." With its pulsating synths and Alison's cooing vocals, it's almost impossible not to hear the raw lust oozing out of the speakers. "Ride A White Horse" and album closer "Number 1" could light any disco floor on fire and vocally reminds me of someone as cool as Debbie Harry back when Blondie were in their heyday. Mellower moments don't disappoint either and tracks such as "You Never Know" and "Let It Take You" sound like Kate Bush if she ever would have made a dance record. Also, not enough praise can be echoed about the production and music that Will Gregory lays down for Alison. It's as superb and glowing as Alison's vocals, and both music maker and singer are on top of their game. The only negative thing I can say about Supernature is it's a damn shame that this album didn't come out sooner domestically. It's been available on import since August of 2005 and I guarantee if Mute had gotten their act together and put it out in the U.S. around the same time as the European release, it would have made my top 10 last year without a doubt. This is the best dance album I've heard since LCD Soundsystem and to see these guys finally come into their own after rooting for them for 6 years makes it all the more rewarding.
