The Goo Goo Dolls are a 90's version of the Replacements, not that anyone could replace Paul Westerberg. They serve up hard-edged guitar riffs with pop driven lyrical melodies. But unlike the Replacements, the Dolls are the kind of band critics hate and the general public loves.
Dizzy Up The Girl is full of hits, from the heart-wrenching "Iris," to "Slide," which has the same type of feel as "Iris" without reaching the same emotional level. "Black Balloon," the albums most depressing song, will probably become a hit as well.
The Goo Goo Dolls play it pretty safe, staying well within what has become the definitive 90's sound--mix a hooky guitar riff with a string section and throw in a little mandolin for good measure. The album is full of this type of arrangement.
Dizzy Up The Girl is a good album, but not a great one. It's not one that you'll likely be listening to a few years from now. If you've done the same, I'd recommend you pick it up.
