Is Hot Water Music trying to give some sort of sub-conscious hint that
they are in fact the "The New What Next?" The group of southerners known
as Hot Water Music have been ravaging Florida for the last ten years
with the force and torment of Andrew and Ivan combined. This is their
seventh album with trillions of other EP's, splits, and compilation
appearances, yet HWM have remained underground after all these years. Sprouting out of Gainesville, Florida's scene that is burgeoning with great bands - they are Gods in their own sphere, but largely obscure for a band of their caliber.
After Some records released No Division in 1999 the band moved up to the punk melting pot of Epitaph records. Bringing with them their beard growing and beer drinking brand of
indie-rock they had cultivated along with other Floridian bands
like Radon, Panthro U.K. United 13, Discount and many others.
HWM's first Epitaph recording was A Flight and a Crash, and it was an
obvious departure from the band's other albums. It seems that the last
two records, including Caution were like Finding the
Rhythms of the New Millennium. The band seemed to be experimenting more with their style.
On The New What Next, HWM has matured and finally honed
their art to a perfect veneer. This, my friends, is the sound of rock and
roll in its purest form. Along with guitar hooks big enough to catch
trophy Montana paddle fish, the new record is a whip crack in the face with
the lyrics to match. Watch out for this band, they are on the rise.
They remind me of the part in Raising Arizona when John Goodman and his
brother are escaping from prison. In the middle of a rainstorm they reach
out of the ground covered with mud and claw themselves to the
surface. That is what HWM is doing; digging out of the underground in the
midst of the over saturated mainstream music scene. So watch out, any day
now this band is going to reach up and grab onto your guts and never let
go.
