"Make Yourself" by Incubus (1999)
Incubus still has the talent and capacity to make a great album. But, Make Yourself feels as though these guys are satisfied by producing mediocre sounds. Every song on this album is worth listening to and the catchy tunes will get stuck in your head. But, where's the funk? Where is the electric energy? Understandably, Incubus' first full length release Science is a hard album to top. But, the feeling just is not there. These songs are slow, which isn't a bad thing as long as slow doesn't turn to repetitive, as it does on this album. This is not a bad release, it's just not what you'd expect from Incubus. Incubus is an excellent band, it just sounds like they pushed for a release so quickly that they ended up with a pre-mature sound. Too bad they can't pull this off the shelf, gently set it back in the Incubator, and wait 'til the doctors agree it is ready for release.
