13 years. Can you believe it? It's been that long since Ritual de lo Habitual, (the last album from the band that launched the grunge movement just as much as the Pixies did), but for some reason always get forgotten about. Since then though, it's been nothing but disappointment from these guys.
Farrell did two sub par albums with Porno for Pyros and had a horrendous couple of years as DJ Peretz, and did anyone listen to Dave Navarro's solo album? My goodness did that blow. But thank the lord, they're back and rocking like the good old days. Right off the bat it's clear that Farrell has not lost a step vocally. He still sounds like no one else, and proves that he still is one of the greatest voices in rock. To accompany one of the greatest voices in rock, you need one of the greatest guitarists, and Navarro has always been just that when in Jane's Addiction. Stephen Perkins drumming is top notch as always and Eric Avery's bass playing is.... oh yeah, Avery and Farrell still hate each other, and Avery isn't back! Oh well, Alanis Morrisette's old bass player Chris Chaney will have to do (anyone else find it funny that Avery is now Morrisette's new bass player. Isn't it ironic, don't you think?) The brand new single "Just Because" is showing everyone else in rock right now what real rock stars sound and look like, and hopefully everyone will start copying their look-- god knows I can only take the crap that's out there right now for so long ( I'm looking right at you Good Charlotte) The best track is the self titled track called "Strays." This song is very reminiscent of their legendary "Three Days." Run out and buy this, it's really the best that mainstream rock has to offer right now.
