Rabbit Fur Coat, for all intents and purposes, is Rilo Kiley lead singer and Indie-Rock princess Jenny Lewis's first solo album. The album is co-credited with The Watson Twins, her backing band, because that's just the kind of class act Lewis has become. The Watson Twins are kinda like Lewis's own Tennessee Two, except they hail from Kentucky and are on board more for their Country-Gospel style vocals than to hold down a backbeat or anything such as that.
Instead of making a solo album that smacks of the band she fronts, Lewis has taken this project into territory that feels like Dolly Parton or Emmylou Harris crossed with someone like Neko Case, and it pays off in spades. Lewis doesn't have as strong and fiery a vocal presence as someone like Case, but her vocals are so timidly precious and pure that you can't help but swoon. Producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint) does a great job behind the boards capturing the bigger sounds of the album, such as the barn-burning stomp of "The Big Guns." Whereas M. Ward contributes production to the more intimate moments like the highly emotional self-titled track. Both styles are equally appealing to this occasional country boy.
Speaking of M. Ward, he pops up vocally near the end of Rabbit Fur Coat on a cover of The Traveling Wilburys "Handle With Care." Jenny Lewis as George Harrison, Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie (and The Postal Service with Lewis) as Roy Orbison, M. Ward as Jeff Lynne and Connor Oberst of Bright Eyes as Bob Dylan? It doesn't get any cooler than this. Rabbit Fur Coat is a wonderfully pleasant listen, and certainly holds it's own up against anything Lewis has done with Rilo Kiley.
