Over the years there have been many musicians who have covered Led Zeppelin tunes--in fact several years ago Jason Bonham (son of the late Zep drummer) and his band released an entire album of Zeppelin covers. But with this album, we have something completely different: the man who started the band, created the myth, and was the backbone of Zeppelin for 12 years--together with The Black Crowes--perhaps the closest band we have to a Led Zeppelin today, in terms of sound and drug use.
This live double disc opus was recorded at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles last year and is a triumph among live records. The majority of the album is Zep covers, but the boys have also included some surprises--a few B.B. King numbers and a Black Crows tune that is actually a Jimmy Rogers classic.
In addition to the virtuoso Page, Rich Robinson also lays out the riffs--putting that Crow-ish stamp on the proceedings. Together the two guitarists handle this smorgasbord of song with considerable ease. On the frontline, singer Chris Robinson, hits all those Robert Plant screeches and high-notes, but with his own style--making him, I think, the best singer to ever tackle a Zep cover.
However, before you run out and spend your hard-earned cash on this album, keep in mind that the degree to which you'll like this album will depend on how much you like The Black Crowes. Even though Jimmy Page is playing with them, they still have their own sound incorporated into the music. Being a huge Zeppelin fan, my 5 star rating is a little biased. But it's definitely a good four and a half.
