It's been nearly a year since punk icon Joey Ramone's passing, after succumbing to lymphatic cancer at the age of 49. Fortunately, he left us with possibly some of his best work to date. After the Ramones' break up in 1996, Joey wasted no time in continuing to write his signature 3-chord power-pop punk riffs; garnering his only solo attempt.
Producer, guitarist and long-time friend Daniel Ray worked alongside Joey from the beginning of the album. They finished recording the entire album before Joey's passing and Ray finished mixing the album shortly after. Other album credits go to bassist Andy Shernoff (the Dictators), with drumming duties shared by Frank Furano (Cracker and Del Lords) and former bandmate Marky Ramone. Captain Sensible (the Damned) and the Misfits also guest on other tracks, and Ramone's brother Micky Leigh adds a vocal part to the closing title track, "Don't Worry About Me."
Joey didn't differ much from the typical Ramones' style. The album is a throw back to previous Ramones' records. It includes a cover of "What a Wonderful World," and the Stooges' "1969." It even boasts a track titled "Maria Bartiromo," (the CNBC anchor) in which he sings about his portfolio of tech stocks like Yahoo! and Intel. "I watch you on the TV every single day/those eyes make everything okay." The Ramones' will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 18, 2002.
