Junior Brown is a pretty cool cowpoke. Any country musician who runs around in a suit with a cowboy hat that's curled up on all sides deserves my respect. It almost seems like he's mocking that which he endorses. If this is the case, my hat's off to him.
Junior doesn't fit into today's pretty-boy/glamour girl picture--where country artists' videos appear on MTV, and whose songs are played on adult contemporary radio. Junior is all twangy-country. In fact, there were a few tracks where I could have sworn I was listening to Johnny Cash. But he's not trying to rip-off the Man in Black. Cash wrote somewhat simple songs, whereas Brown's songs have this electric quality that teeters on the edge of blues rock. His guitar playing is a little reminiscent of Jonny Lang or Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
This album isn't without flaws, however. There are a few tracks that got a bit tedious for me, but I'm not the world's biggest country music fan. Long Walk Back isn't the powerhouse that his last album was, but it's good enough
