Cut from the same cloth as all the other hot "it" bands such as The Futureheads, Bloc Party, and Dogs Die In Hot Cars, new Brit band Kaiser Chiefs play the dance punk card just as well as their cohorts do. The most refreshing thing about the Kaiser's however is that they sound like they have a vast range of musical influences to draw from, instead of just trying to mimic the type of sound that's hot right now. Take for instance the album opener "Everyday I Love You Less And Less," a sardonic middle finger of a tune that recalls the biting wit of early XTC, or the first single off of Employment, "I Predict A Riot," which successfully brings the sound of The Jam's All Mod Cons to a new generation.
"Na Na Na Na Naa" has to be a wink to Supergrass, the crowned kings of all Brit bands when it comes to na na na's and la la la's. But the biggest standout track by far is "Saturday Night," mixing Blur's Parklife type verses with David Bowie's "Drive-In Saturday" wha wha wha ooooo! choruses. Not everything on Employment turns out to be a riot though. A few of the tracks near the end like "Oh My God" and "Time Honoured Tradition" are tedious and wear out their welcome quickly. Still, for the most part, Employment is fun party record that will have you singing and dancing along, or speeding in your car if you're not careful. This year's Franz Ferdinand perhaps?
