Backed by the beloved veterans Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, Jarrett, perhaps the finest improvisational pianist ever, has returned to his roots. Inside Out is truly intended for hard-core jazz purists, this album makes Medeski, Martin and Wood sound like cocktail. Jarrett,s trademark hooting and grunting sounds more bizarre than ever, but must contain some sort of codes, because with every whimsical side-road he takes, Peacock and DeJohnette follow like inspired disciples. I,ve been a fan of Jarrett for over 20 years, but even his most accessible stuff is something of an acquired taste. Inside Out is typical of his hit and miss catalogue--alot of transcendental moments of brilliance amid as many that only make sense to Keith.
