No Shirt No Shoes No Problem went triple platinum and it is understandable why. Even though Chesney has the voice for hard-country he's eschewed his traditional country beginnings for the gold of cross-over mainstream success. He's gotten about as far away from the twangy country cliché "lost my wife, dog, pick-up truck style," as you could get and still get your records placed in the country section of record stores. Chesney's blend of country and rock and even some Jimmy Buffett inspired Island rhythms are a breath of fresh air for people who may not be familiar with his laid back, mid-tempo and ballad-based new direction.
Chesney's storytelling style is much like that of the older country artists like George Jones or Willie Nelson but vocally he has more in common with Tim McGraw and his record sales reflect his ability to straddle the gap between new school country and old school purists. "Big Star" is an ode to the rags to riches story of a young lady's rise to stardom, and if you read between the lines this tune might be more autobiographical than the subject's gender suggests. On "The Coast of Somewhere Beautiful" Chesney relates his own story of lost love, with a chorus that laments, "She's on the Coast of somewhere beautiful running with my heart," he seems to be sending the message that no amount of success makes one immune from heartache.
Kenny waxes nostalgic on a number of these tunes, particularly "Young," which is wistful look back at the carefree days of youth where your primary concerns were listening to music and drinking discount beer. While "I Remember" is a more direct look at the could've, would've, should'ves in life. The albums centerpiece is definitely "The Good Stuff" a simple song about the satisfaction and beauty of having a loving significant other to share your life with. The Title Track is an Island getaway song where life's cares dissolve like the sand between your toes and the salt around the lip of your third Margarita. This song was probably written as a dream rather than a reality as Chesney has been working like a dog to make a name for himself and quite ironically it's No Shoes No Shirt No Problem that has tipped the scales to a point that Chesney has No Doubts about his future as a big player in the Country game. With the success of this release it looks like blue skies and wide open roads for this likable, down-to-earth Tennessee boy. A tip of the hat for a job well done, Kenny.
