James Murphy of the production group The DFA and now main man behind his own music project LCD Soundsystem is so much cooler than me that it's not even funny. And God how I hate him for it; but in that enviously pouty kind of way. LCD Soundsystem is an album full of music made by a music snob, for music snobs. If you consider yourself a music snob, and don't like LCD Soundsystem, congratulations, you're now being made fun of by your fellow music snobs. LCD Soundsystem is basically every cool musical influence you could possibly think of - rolled into a 16 track double album. It's mostly dance oriented, but there's rock, punk, dub, and ambient all thrown into the pot - just to name a few.
LCD Soundsystem starts off with what I'm sure will be a dance floor staple at the cool kids' houses this year, "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House." "Too Much Love" and "Tribulations" essentially feel like bitch-slaps aimed at those electro hacks Fischerspooner. "Never As Tired As When I'm Waking Up" cleverly borrows from Led Zeppelin's "The Rain Song" without feeling like a rip off, and "On Repeat" slyly chisels some dance punk guitar scratching reminiscent of Andy Gill from Gang Of Four. Listening to "Thrills" is liked getting zapped repeatedly by a lightning bolt of bad assness, and "Disco Infiltrator" sounds like a lost take from Beck's Midnite Vultures album. All this and you still have another disc to look forward to that's just as good! Want to hear James Murphy tell you just how cool he is? He's more that willing to oblige on disc 2's opener "Losing My Edge." No really, it's nearly eight minutes of him telling you about some of his musical influences. Pretentious? Certainly. Awesome? Oh yes. One of the best albums of the year? Count on it.
