Aw Cmon is the first of two albums simultaneously released on the same day by Nashville's 12 members of eccentrics Lambchop, and first since 2002's blatantly spare Is a Woman album. Lead man Kurt Wagner with his Ian Dury meets Stuart Staples from the
Tindersticks deep booming voice leads his band into familiar territory for Aw Cmon, going back to lush orchestrated work that influenced one of their best albums, Nixon. (If you look closely at the artwork of Aw Cmon, there's a little wink to the Nixon artwork as well). Aw Cmon gets the ball rolling with "Being Tyler," an excellent instrumental, that is just as good as any song Wagner has written and other instrumentals sprinkled here, "Timothy B. Schmidt and The Lone Official" are incredible as well. As far as actual songs, "Steve Mcqueen" (no it's not a cover of that horrible Sheryl Crow song) is one of the best, with its nod to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," it oddly enough wouldn't be at all out of place next to anything off of Bob Dylan's "Oh Mercy." "Nothing But a Blur From a Bullet Train" is great as well, and definitely boasts the best string arrangements on the album. It also wouldn't truly be a Lambchop album if there wasn't some odd head-scratcher track as well, and it definitely comes in the form of "Women Help to Create the Kind of Men They Despise," with it's strange title, and even stranger delivery of vocals.

Overall, Aw Cmon is definitely a worthwhile addition to the ever expansive catalog of Lambchop albums, but to say it's up to snuff with albums like Nixon and How I Quit Smoking would be a bit of an overstatement.
