This album is, seriously, the best album I've heard this year. It's basically more experimental Primus with splashes of jazz here and there, but just enough distortion to give the jazz aspect a hard edge, ultimately making one of the most unique sounds I've ever encountered. There's literally no end to the instruments Claypool uses on this record, there are surprises around every corner. Strings and woodwinds abound, along with everything from sitar to jaw harp. Claypool wrote, produced, and engineered the entire album and assembled an eclectic roster of players to flesh out his skewed vision. On top of it all is Les's one-of-a-kind vocals that smartly tie the proceedings together like a dream.

Purple Onion contains moments that recall Claypool's all-star project Oysterhead, (Trey Anastasio of Phish and ex-Police drummer Stewart Copeland) Personally, I think that The Les Claypool Frog Brigade beats out Oysterhead and Primus, It's just a higher grade of music with more jamming, more electricity, and more experimentation from everyone's favorite bass-thumping madman.
