In the world of dance and hip hop music the producer can be just as much the star as the person singing into the mic and since his 2003 record, "Here Come the Fuzz, Mark Ronson is fast becoming the go-to guy in the UK, producing songs from the debut albums of both Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse. Using soul and hip hop artists, Ronson re-crafts pop tunes in a variety of genres from British pop and reggae to goth rock.
On his second disc his pop aspirations come a little more self assured with Lily Allen giving her take of the Kaiser Chiefs 2005 alt rock single "Oh My God" and newcomer Daniel Merryweather giving a soulful update of the Smiths '87 track "Stop Me If You Think You Heard This One Before," even pairing it with the '66 Supremes hit "You Keep Me Hanging On." The rest of the album is more or less intriguing with Amy Winehouse n "Valerie" and a remake of Britney Spears "Toxic" featuring posthumously released raps from Ol' Dirty.
Despite a few lackluster instrumental tracks, on the whole Version is as catchy as it is funky – further demonstrating Ronson's production prowess. It's also serves as a sound testament to the strength of the new female vocalists on the scene.
