What more can I say about these guys? On the Gimme Gimmes fourth album they prove that they still have the talent and ability to turn any pop song into a great punk melody that's even more catchy (and sometimes more memorable) than the original. On their past three albums they've taken on folk melodies, showtunes, and 60's hits. On Take a Break they cover some of the most popular R&B love songs from the past four decades. The disc starts off with Whitney Houston's "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" which is a solid punk cover and a great starter for the album. Next up, they turn Lionel Richie's "Hello" into a cool, darker-sounding punk song until the chorus turns it around and gives it a happy and uplifting tilt. These guys also manage to turn mellow tearjerkers like Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" and the Jackson 5's classic "I'll Be There" into catchy, faster punk songs that rock and as far as I'm concerned, are a lot more fun to listen to. Other highlights include a rougher, electrified version of Seal's darker hit "Crazy" and the fun, bouncing version of R. Kelly's slow-dance favorite "I Believe I Can Fly." Perhaps my favorite songs were the ska-tinged version of Sinead O'Connor's Prince-penned hit "Nothing Compares 2 U" (which was already one of my favorite heartbreak ballads), and the catchy, spiced-up version of Stevie Wonder's happy feel-good hit "Isn't She Lovely." The closing cover, which is Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman" proves that the boys can tap into their inner female and still make it sound grand. If you're a big fan of catchy pop-punk or punk-covered pop songs, you'll definitely enjoy Take a Break.
