Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony--what a combination. Over the past few years, bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have released new renditions of their songs that got us hooked on symphonics. These records are intriguing and excellent. But, nothing could have prepared me for S&M. Being under the assumption that this was going to be another totally symphonic, slow melodic release, I was not too excited about this one. I couldn't have been more wrong. Metallica actually plays with the symphony. The orchestra brings a depth to these songs that is dark and brooding, while Metallica rocks like always, The structure of the songs are the same, but the orchestra adds a feel that is unique and wholly worthwhile. I expect that more bands will follow in the footsteps of Metallica, and we will hear plenty more bands playing with full orchestra. The only downside to this album is that--even though the orchestra sounds amazing--is at times the frantic wailing of the strings, trying to keep up with the guitar sounds a little silly. Just silly enough to make me chuckle, but not enough to change my opinion on this cd. Metallica plays two new songs and plenty of old favorites. This album offers up a nicely mixed bag for Metallica fans old and new.
