I'm not afraid to admit it. Ever since I was 2 or 3, Michael Jackson has been one of my favorite singers and entertainers. Even though he's become totally bizarre over the years, I'm sure there's still many others out there who feel the same way I do about his music and consummate skills as a performer. After all, at every dance you go to you hear at least one of his songs, right? Well, Number Ones was obviously put together so fans could have what Jackson considers his greatest hits on one CD. Plus, unlike his first greatest hits effort, 1995's HIStory, there's no second disc filled with new songs that pale in comparison to his older hits.
The only problem with Number Ones is that it doesn't contain every hit song that Michael's ever had. It starts off with Off the Wall's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You," but it leaves out "Off the Wall" and "She's Out Of My Life" (which was included on HIStory). From Thriller there's obviously "Billie Jean," "Beat It," and "Thriller," but there's no "Wanna Be Startin' Something" or "The Girl is Mine" (which was his popular duet with Paul McCartney). Surprisingly, there's a whopping six hits from Bad that are included here. There's "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," the lovey-dovey "I Just Can't Stop Lovin' You," the saccharine "Man in the Mirror," and my two personal hard-hitting favorites "Dirty Diana" and "Smooth Criminal" (which got a revival thanks to the Alien Ant Farm cover).
Dangerous only gets one entry with the happy-feel-good hit "Black or White" (no "Remember the Time" or "Heal the World") while Invincible (his worst-reviewed album) gets two songs. There's the groovy "You Rock My World" and "Break of Dawn." Does anyone even remember "Break of Dawn?" There's also two hits from HIStory. There's the massive hit ballad "You Are Not Alone" and the frighteningly haunting "Earth Song" (which is my favorite ballad of his). Unfortunately they left out my favorite hits "Stranger in Moscow," "They Don't Care About Us," and "Scream" which was his amazing, earth-shattering duet with sister Janet. There's also a new song, the R. Kelly penned "One More Chance," as well as a live version of the theme from the movie "Ben." All in all, this is a pretty good greatest hits compilation. I just wish it could have had every single one of the hits included on one album.
