Faith No More is no more, but singer Mike Patton has obviously been keeping himself busy--delivering two new releases within a couple of months. Mr. Bungle's newest release is of the ultimate quality. But don't expect it to sound like either of the prior albums, not that they had any sort cohesiveness anyway. In the past, Mr. Bungle was an artistic outlet for Mike. While Faith No More was releasing heavy, hard hitting rock, Bungle was releasing cartoonish, carnival music that veered violently from melodic and silly to outright destructive and weird. And we loved every second of it. But this album is different, this album sounds . . .well . . . it has harmony. Patton sings! The band lays out smooth melodies, almost lounge style at parts!?! When I listened to this record, the music wavered as I waited for Mike to suddenly let loose his trademark caterwauling. It never happened. A very pleasant surprise. Although this doesn't sound like typical Bungle, this is an absolute masterpiece.
