No Ska, no Reggae, no Jazz, just Punk and Punk and a little Polka, is how Eric Melvin, NOFX guitarist, describes the latest opus by LA's Phat-four. He couldn't have summed it up more succinctly. NOFX doesn't f--k around. Pump Up The Valuum starts off with power chord thrash-core and doesn't let up. Next to these guys blink 182 is Adult Contemporary.
True to NOFX form, the subject matter of these 14 nuggets is crude and comical--I can't even allude to any of it in a classy publication like this. The only song with any Pop pretensions is "Bottle To The Ground," which has a melody that recalls The Ramones. There is also a novelty song that is the aforementioned Polka, not that this album needs comic relief.
There's certainly nothing ground-breaking about this disc--it's a perfect summer soundtrack for adolescent males who can't get laid to save their lives and make up for it by driving around cranking their car stereos--and acting like they don't care. Y'know--rock and roll.
