What was once highly suspected is now official: New Moon taking in over 140 MILLION dollars (!) at the box office in its first weekend makes the Twilight Saga the biggest worldwide phenomenon since Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke filled that film's soundtrack with songs tweens would swoon over from mainstream acts such as Linkin Park, Paramore and Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's favorite, Muse. However, New Moon director Chris Weitz is an entirely different person and music lover all together. It wasn't too long ago if you remember that Chris Weitz directed the 2002 film About a Boy and had British Indie darling of that moment Badly Drawn Boy do the entire soundtrack. Well, for New Moon, Weitz has enlisted a who's who of Indie-Rock up and comers and every one of them have submitted previously unreleased songs for this project. The only question is, will fickle fans of the first installment love this soundtrack or hate it?

Well, for the most part, fans of the first soundtrack have come right out and said they hate this soundtrack. The biggest complaint I've heard is that they don't know who any of these artists are. Boo hoo. I'm sorry that MTV, VH1 and your local radio stations don't play great acts like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Lykke Li and Hurricane Bells but get over it. I'm so tired of stale garbage bands being recycled over and over, it's time for some new blood and the New Moon soundtrack has it. Don't get me wrong, there are still a few big names here. Death Cab For Cutie's single "Meet Me on the Equinox" is the lead single and The Killers, Thom Yorke from Radiohead and once again, Muse, make appearances here to make sure there are a few recognizable names so people will buy this album without paying close attention to the fact that the rest of the album is all bands people may not be entirely familiar with. But just know this, there are bands and artists on this soundtrack that give me hope that a new wave of talent is on the horizon to clear out some of the no talent hacks that clog mainstream radiowaves. Acts such as Grizzly Bear dueting with Victoria Legrand from the band Beach House on "Slow Life" and Justin Vernon from Bon Iver dueting with St. Vincent on the haunting "Roslyn" are two of the biggest standout tracks. Brand new group Band of Skulls' "Friends" is also one of the best tracks here as well. Have an open mind Twilight fans. Your new favorite band may just be on this soundtrack. How would you know if you don't even give it a fair shot?
