New Order's 2001 album Get Ready wasn't just a great comeback album for New Order, it was their best album to date period, featuring a much heavier rock sound that made fans of even the biggest synth-skeptics. That in itself makes Waiting For The Sirens' Call all the more disappointing, because this new album has the dubious honor of being this legendary band's most phoned in and mediocre release so far.
Let's just get the few good songs out of the way real quick. "Morning Night And Day" is a fun and upbeat dancy number, and the self-titled track is reminiscent of "True Faith," one of the best N.O. tunes from years past. "Working Overtime" is also great, and it's the only song here that has that Get Ready rock feel.
Now lets talk about the absolute dogs. I shouldn't have to explain why a song titled "Dracula's Castle" sucks should I? I mean, the title speaks for itself. "Jetstream" has choruses filled with "J-E-T! You are so good for me!" and it's about as good for my brain as huffing a paper bag filled with paint thinner. Ironically, first single "Krafty" is anything but, with crap lines like "out there the world is a beautiful place, with mountains, lakes and the human race." The absolute worst though is "Hey Now What You Doing, with its R.E.M. "Imitation Of Life" riff lifting, and awful lyrics such as "You gotta hold your head up high, you know it's not too late to try." Just terrible!
You know, it took eight years in between albums until Get Ready finally came out, so apparently that's the trick for New Order: only release one album a decade and you've got a surefire winner. This 63-minute train wreck and their embarrassing Coachella performance (see my Coachella review) will hopefully put their recording plans on the back burner until 2013.
