"Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (2008)
Resurrection of Cave.
After nearly a decade of stagnant and predictably safe work, it seems that Nick Cave, who is now in his early 50's, is in the process of going through somewhat of career resurgence. Last year's Grinderman project was almost a rebirth of sorts with Cave rediscovering his noisier, edgier side that was reminiscent of his early days with his first band The Birthday Party and just a short year later he and his trusty band of Bad Seeds have released Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! a much needed breath of fresh air that is probably their best work in over ten years.
The freshest breath to the Lazarus sessions has to be the fact that Cave and The Bad Seeds have thrown out the usual piano-led arrangements for something more straight-forward Rock oriented. Also, Cave has adopted a sinister, talk-sing style throughout most of Dig that is truly fascinating. It's almost as if Cave is more interested in telling bizarre campfire stories with musical accompaniment than actually singing a ditty. The most encapsulating tune is the album closer "More News From Nowhere" which is accompanied by an infectiously memorable guitar lick by the brilliant Mick Harvey. The opening self-titled track also shows that the band may be having more fun than in recent years as well. Their all together sing-a-long of the line "Dig yourself Lazarus!" throughout the proceedings is infectiously fun. While Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! Doesn't quite match the level of greatness that Grinderman did last year, it's still a great album that for now is right up there with the deepest of Nick's excavations.
