When you list the most influential bands in rock history The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Metallica, the band that invariably finds it's way onto the list is Nirvana. Nirvana was the Beatles of my generation, the impact they had on music and even society was incredible. Nirvana was the death nell to the overbloated 80's and forced the music industry to change it's M.O. Then at the pinnacle of their fame Kurt Cobain took his own life, leaving a hole in the music world and the hearts of his followers.
Kurt had become a generation's brightest hope and then biggest disappointment. However years later we have a greatest hits album that, in some ways, helps heal the wound. The album starts out with the angst ridden darkness of "You Know You're Right" and then eases on into the free flow of "About a Girl" and on to many of their seminal classics-- "Sliver" "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Heart Shaped Box." This is a powerful reminder to the next generation of how enduring Nirvana's legacy truly is. Required listening, this.
