With the recent passing of the genius J Dilla who suddenly succumbed to an ongoing two-year battle with Lupus, you wouldn't think that the Stones Throw Hip-Hop crew would have a lot to feel jovial about these days. As sad and tragic as Dilla's departure from God's green earth is, Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf A.K.A. Chris Manak does have a few things that must warrant celebrating. One is the Stones Throw label reaching their 10th Anniversary this year and two is the wild success of last year's Danger Doom album that saw the epically fantastic pairing of DJ Danger Mouse (who finally received some well deserved mainstream recognition with his other project, Gnarls Barkley) with MF Doom (arguably the greatest rapper alive today). Danger Doom was also a concept album of sorts revolving around Cartoon Network's Adult Swim late night programming, mainly the show Aqua Teen Hunger Force, as the fast-food trio of characters would chime in lending their silly voices to the proceedings from time to time.
The unexpected success of the Danger Doom record has seen Adult Swim become a champion of sorts for Stones Throw and you can't blame Manak for seizing a golden opportunity when he sees one. Peanut Butter Wolf Presents: Chrome Children is an Adult Swim sponsored, one stop Stones Throw shopping value-pak that will interest newcomers and fanatics alike. Uninitiated newbies will be introduced to the brilliance that is mad-skillz rappers such as Percee P, M.E.D, Madlib and lib's younger brother Oh No. Fan-boys will desperately want to get their hands on Chrome Children too just for the fact that everything here is previously unreleased; the cream of the crop being unearthed J Dilla material and a Madvillain track (Madlib and MF Doom's project for those not in the know) that's soooo tasty it'll have you frothing at the mouth. Obsessives also have another reason to cheer: every copy of Chrome Children is accompanied with a live DVD featuring performances from just about the entire Stones Throw crew at the last SXSW festival in Austin, including a Madvillain performance that is so mind-bogglingly sick your head will burst a damn blood vessel if you're not careful. Chrome Children is a virtual cornucopia of some of the finest that Hip-Hop has to offer at the moment so don't sleep on it; go pick it up this instant.
