Much like NOFX or AFI, Pennywise has always been one of the more established punk bands teetering on the brink of becoming as popular and "radioized" as counterparts like Green Day, Offspring, Rancid, and Bad Religion. Unless you count their singles "Alien" and "Victim of Reality" from Straight Ahead, Pennywise has somehow managed to avoid alternative radio playlists throughout all the years they've been around. Although I feel their songs have gotten better with time, Land of the Free? is another one of their typical angry punk-rock packages with politically-charged lyrics. This is evident with the fist-pumping shout-alongs 2 and 3 with its chorus of "The world is a smoking gun that is loaded, soon it's gonna blow you away." Oh yeah, "Fuck Authority" was also another fist-pumper that would obviously please the angst-ridden-skateboarding-teenager crowd. Since most of the songs were typical fast-paced rebellious punk, "My God," "Who's on Your Side," and the soft-to-loud "Divine Intervention" were good slower-paced alternatives. The best song here is "Set me Free" with its breakdown chorus screaming, you guessed it, "Set me free!" The last song, "Anyone Listening," was also another good slower-tempo song with deep lyrics and a memorable guitar riff. Although they aren't really breaking any new ground here musically, Land of the Free? is a solid album that any Pennywise fan would expect from these straight-ahead pioneers of honest to goodness punk rock.
