Back with a proper follow up to that massively popular whistling ditty "Young Folks" that made everyone in this country either joyful, crazy or a little bit of both, Peter Bjorn & John's Living Thing is an album that is bound to leave a lot of listeners scratching their baffled heads.
Not content with making "Young Folks Pt. 2", these three Sweedes have gone out of their way to make an album that is not a Rock oriented record, or even close to casual listener friendly for that matter. Living Thing is full of moments that are based around percussion, hand claps, children's choirs, electronics and anything else not having to do with anything close to conventional. Sometimes it works, like on the infectious first single "Nothing to Worry About" (where the children's choir is used to great effect) or "It Don't Move Me," which feels like it could be the Electronic second cousin to "Young Folks." But a lot of the time on Living Thing, it almost feels like PB & J are going out of their way to alienate their listeners just to see if people are actually interested in them for the artists they are and not for the gimmicky whistling group that they unfairly got lumped into.
I'm guessing that future repeated listens of Living Thing will open up the more difficult tracks and reveal that there is more here than meets the eye, but it's definitely gonna take some work to scratch this surface and unfortunately I think a lot of listeners out there will be quick to dismiss this one as a giant disappointment.
