Scott Harren is a very busy man. When he's not recording fantastic music under other aliases such as Savath + Savalas and Delarosa and Asora, he records under probably his most well known alias, Prefuse 73. It's amazing that with the volume of work that Harren puts out every year, he still has not even come close to running into a multitude of mediocrity. One Word Extinguisher is no different, and is probably his most refined release to date. What Harren brings to the table is a melding of hip hop production that artists such as DJ Shadow, DJ Spooky, and RJD2 have perfected, with a blend of IDM music that artists such as Matmos, Oval and Autechre have idealized. This blend of music is absolutely audacious, and makes for one hell of a compelling listen. It's interesting to hear top notch hip hoppers like Mr. Lif from the Def Jux crew and Diverse rap over a smooth mix of scratched records with bleeps and blips. Harren also has a bit of wicked fun with other IDM masters such as Dabraye on the wonderfully disjointed "Uprock" and "Invigorate," and Daedelus on the beat box/bad ass oboe influenced "Busy Signal." At 23 tracks, there is one thing that One Word Extinguisher never is, and that is boring. Prefuse 73 has created an album that is boggling to the mind and in one word, compelling
