Puddle of Mudd will go down as being one my all-time top guilty-pleasure bands. Probably the band that I'd be the most embarrassed to have my friends discover in my player. Sure, they may lack originality and sound like every other post-grunge band to come down the pike since 1994 - but they sure have some damn catchy songs. There - I've said it. Throw your stones if you must. The first single, "Control" is a typical soft-verse/loud-chorus grunge fest that'll have you singing along, and "Drift and Die" mixes acoustic and distorted rock for a blend that's reminiscent of Alice in Chains. Some of those songs with the damn catchy choruses I was talking about are the thumping "Out of My Head," the paranoid "Never Change" and the soaring "Basement." And who can forget the ultimate song to spin when you're pissed off over a breakup, "She Hates Me." The last song, the terribly-titled "Piss it All Away," is a nice mellow jam that reminds me of Godsmack's "Voodoo" or "Serenity." However, the best song on the album is the melancholy/rage infested power ballad, "Blurry." I always find myself singing, "Can you take it all away? Well, you shoved it in my face!" but drive the back streets so as to avoid the prying eyes of those who would judge. This song is so good, it's destined to be the next "Far Behind" (remember, that classic grunge ballad from Candlebox?) One listen, and it's not hard to tell that Puddle of Mudd is another unoriginal band following in the footsteps of Nirvana, but beware, because the more you listen the more these tunes are destined to become wedged permanently into your chorus cortex. Come on, I bet there's a band you secretly love, but find yourself hiding if from your friends. It's the Carpenters, isn't it?
