As if the 80's weren't already cracked out enough, the brain trust over at the Fearless compound have put together a tribute comp to the decade that made Corey Haim and Corey Feldman a power couple and love synoymous with Molly Ringwald. Before you slip into your day-glo leg-warmers and run right out to snap it up, let me just tack on a warning: The lamest pop-punk bands on the block are in charge of this piss-weak reincarntion. Not to mention the fact that the song choices are beyond gay.
Everyone from Rufio to Midtown have thrown their support behind this misbeggoten misfire - all of them trying to act as if they actually adored the music, not just looking to hop aboard the hot-decade-of-the-month bandwagon. The name of thie comp itself "Punk Goes 80's" is pretty ridiculous - PUNK? "Punk goes 80's." Excuse me I don't see any Rancid or Dagnasty on here. Change that shits to "Pop-Punk emoes 80's." Which translates into a shitty Killers and Action Action sound.
Another big strike agaist Punk Goes 80s is that most of these covers are the most played out and done-to-death songs from any decade. They should've dug a little deeper to find the real gems. The Romantics and Dramarama had bitchin' ass songs that would've been cool to hear covered - but no, we're stuck with Simple Minds and Modern English. Plus The Buggles, "Video Killed the Radio Star. We could've lived without that one - I don't even think it came out in the 80s. One of the only good songs is Paula Abdul's "Straight Up" covered by Halifax. That song rocks and this inspired rendidtion makes my nut sack sweaty. Also A Thorn For Every Heart does a solid take on Oingo-Boingo's "Dead Man's Party."
Two of Adam Mast's favorite songs from prom night are also on this comp: The Outfield's "Your Love" and the Footloose song "Holding Out For a Hero." I had a Huey Lewis and the News tape growing up (Sports) and it was awesome, plus Back To The Future rocked man! That doesn't mean I want to hear some emofied cock-ramming version of "Power of Love." If Huey were dead he'd be rolling over in his grave.
Fearless had a good idea but avoided creativity for convenience. Perhaps this clumsy compilation will help drive a flaming stake through the heart of the 80s and we can all get a good night's sleep.
