Artists covering other artists for a full album is nothing new. Bruce Springsteen's previous album before Magic was an album full of Pete Seeger covers, Robyn Hitchcock once did two discs worth of Bob Dylan covers and even a small Indie-Rock band like Dirty Projectors just did their own version of Black Flag's Damaged this year. Rufus Wainwright's Rufus Does Judy is an amazing feat however because this isn't something that was done take after take in the studio; this is Rufus actually performing Judy Garland's 1961 classic concert from start to finish with a 36-piece orchestra and all.
Whether you're a Rufus Wainwright fan or just a fan of old classics, Rufus Does Judy is just plain fun. Familiar standards such as "When Your Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You)" and "Puttin' On the Ritz" are great to hear coming from such an amazing vocal talent like Rufus. The special guests that Wainwright brings out are a treat as well. Rufus' sister Martha brings down the house with her version of "Stormy Weather" and Wainwright even brings his mother Kate McGarrigle out for a stellar version of "Over the Rainbow." Judy Garland's daughter Lorna Luft makes an appearance at the near end on "After You've Gone" and just like a Garland family member would she absolutely steals the show. Somewhere up above Judy has to be smiling and this star-studded re-creation at Carnegie Hall certainly made the audience that evening and now people the whole world over smile right along with her.
