After listening to Jennie Bomb, Sahara Hotnights 2002 American debut, it seemed almost too obvious to call these ladies simply just a Swedish rehashing of The Donnas. The Ramones meets The Runaways. But with Sahara Hotnights major label debut Kiss & Tell, those comparisons will definitely need a printed retraction. While The Donnas endlessly mine the topics of booze and boys like the 80's butt-rock of old, Maria Andersson and company seem to be headed in a new wave direction perhaps looking to be crowned the next Go-Go's. "Stay/Stay Away" is by far the best of the bunch here, with Andersson's absolutely precious vocals sounding very similar to what Belinda Carlisle laid down on "Our Lips Are Sealed" (Hillary and Haylie Duff are going to hell by the way). "Stupid Tricks" seems to be a wink to "This Year's Model" era Elvis Costello, and lead guitarist Jennie Asplund cleverly rethinks John Fogerty's "Born on the Bayou" guitar riff while Andersson does her best Chrissie Hynde impression on the excellent "The Difference Between Love and Hell." As The Donnas seem to be wearing out their welcome with every new release, these sexy Swedes have proven here that the welcome wagon may be parked outside the Swedish Embassy for years to come.
