Scatter the Ashes may be on Epitaph, but they're definitely not your average punk band. These guys prove that since their music is so creative and amazing, there's absolutely no way to pigeon-hole them into any one genre. They cover all different kinds of territory, from heavy metal to punk to new wave. The opener, "Caesara" is a great powerstarter with its dazzling drumming and its heavenly, keyboard-laced chorus. This band is comprised of consummate musicians and they play as a team and all know their respective roles. This is demonstrated on songs like "City in the Sea" with its excellent breakdowns and startups, and "Affinity" with its explosive rapid-fire drumming. They also lace their song with elements from a number of different styles of music. For instance, "Citadel (The New Fall Forest) has an 80's synthesized feel, "In the Company of Wolves" has its shocking, quiet breaths, and "Christine Daae" has a great drum-and-bongo breakdown that made me want to learn how to play it. The amazing "White Actress" has a powerful sound that's reminiscent of At the Drive-In. It starts off with dramatic-sounding guitars which take an emotional turn and start crunching and roaring fiercely in the middle of the song. I was totally blown away. However, in my opinion, the most powerful songs are "Division" with its screams that seemed to cry for help near the end, and "Hour Invocation" with its blood-curdling, earth-shattering screaming that would send chills up anyone's spine. Scatter The Ashes serves up a dynamic and fascinating blend of styles that never gets boring, and it kept me entertained and on my feet while wondering what explosive bang was waiting around the corner
