Soulsavers technically consists of Rich Machin and Ian Glover, two gentlemen who specialize in making downbeat, dark and moody Electronic music that has a slight Gospel feel to it. To make their new album even more moody, Machin and Glover went out and hired one of the moodiest vocalists they could possibly get their hands on, former Screaming Trees and sometime Queens of the Stone Age singer Mark Lanegan. Lanegan is no stranger to taking on projects that are far from predictable. Just last year he did an album of duets with former Belle & Sebastian singer Isobel Campbell and next year his Gutter Twins project with former Afghan Whigs lead man Greg Dulli will finally see the light of day. But here, Lanegan has been employed to be Soulsavers' secret weapon and without him, most of this album would be passable at best.
Album opener "Revival" is a Soul-filled masterpiece. Lanegan's vocals mixed with the Gospel backup singers is the perfect blend of serenity meeting devil may care attitude. Lanegan's duet with Will Oldham of Bonnie "Prince" Billy on a cover of Neil Young's "Through My Sails" is a treat as well with Machin and Glover adding just the right atmosphere to an already perfect blend of vocals. The few instrumental tracks that are laced throughout It's Not How Far You Fall are pretty unexciting and are the only moments here that don't shine, but whenever Lanegan takes center stage, Soulsavers new album is a near diamond almost solely because of Mark's gruff exterior.
