"I'm just not that much into words lately." That succinct quote from a recent Spin interview with Stephen Malkmus himself pretty much describes his new album Real Emotional Trash with his band The Jicks in a nutshell. Not being into words lately has led Malkmus and company to make their jammiest record yet that's light years away from the style of group that Malkmus helmed in the 90's with Pavement, one of that decades' largest Indie-Rock influencers. Joining The Jicks for the first time on an album is Janet Weiss who still drums with Quasi from time to time but is more famously known for helming the kit with the now defunct but forever great Sleater-Kinney. Weiss is instantly an upgrade for Malkmus who's guitar solos and improvisational noodling are clearly at the forefront of Real Emotional Trash and you can tell after initial listens that's he's clearly challenged and inspired by playing with someone of her caliber.
The crown jewel of Real Emotional Trash has to be the 10-minute self-titled track. With every passing minute the song just gets better and better and at the six-minute mark it explodes into a pulsating rhythm of furious guitar and Malkmus belting out what will surely be a live favorite sing-a-long of "Down in Sausalito we had clams for dessert, you spilled some Chardonnay on your gypsy skirt!" Not all of Real Emotional Trash is a jammy guitar fest however. "Gardenia" is one of the best below-the-three-minute-mark tunes that Malkmus has ever come up with and certainly one of the prettiest with Weiss' "ba-bap-ba-da-da-da-da!" back-up vocals being a key feature. Real Emotional Trash is without a doubt Malkmus' most confident and solid start to finish solo record to date.
