Produced by Mike Birnbaum, the Midas man responsible for generating such successes as Bad Brains, Coheed and Cambria and John Mayer, shaped the clay of the newborn band Straylight Run. Their sound is a mixture of shaky male vocals from the mouth of singer-guitarist John Nolan (Former Taking Back Sunday cohort) and the beautiful female vocals by John's sister and keyboardist, Michele Nolan. Of course the girl in the band sings and plays the keyboard, how Anniversary-esc.
The band has a slow, and in a way, dark sound with a lot of effects and drum machine beats helping toward that end. It all makes for an interesting synthesis that is surprisingly unique. The drummer is Will Noon former drummer for Breaking Pangaea.
"The perfect ending" as my girlfriend said is "DEPRESSING." She listened to it nonstop in her truck for four days so it must be good. Yes it does have somber, if not morbid, tone - but I listened to it thoroughly about three times
and found it to be more pure and honest than a fat bong hit of the most chronic Alaskan Thunder Fuck. Although I wouldn't listen to it on a rainy day or just plain listen too hard or you could easily break down and start crying.
Straylight Run are a slowed down version Dashboard confessional or Rocky Votalato on Morphine. Which is not as bad as it may sound. The overabundance of powerful ballads on this record makes for very passionate love making music. If you want more comparisons on sound, Jets to Brazil and My Bloody Valentine popped in my head when I listened. For being Straylight Run's first album it sounds like they have been doing this stuff for decades.
