Usually I find remix albums to be quite distasteful but Electronic/Hip-Hop act Subtle re-imagine the medium in a way that makes new versions of original songs seem refreshing and not redundant. Yell & Ice is a companion piece to last year's phenomenal For Hero: For Fool and instead of just adding a new beat here or a new repetitive blip there, the six members of Subtle (which includes the ridiculously talented duo of Jel and Doseone that you may know from their other group Themselves) blow up the old songs and put them back together in new and exciting ways and also bring guest vocalists along to add to the fun.

The best of the bunch here is "Sinking Pinks" with Chris Adams from Hood and Bracken bringing his programming and sparse vocal genius to a head. Also great is "The Pit Within Pits" that finds Markus Acher from The Notwist (who worked with Themselves on the self-titled LP 13 & God which is still criminally under-appreciated) lending a hand with guest guitar work and cold vocals. Other guest appearances from the likes of Dosh and members of TV On The Radio, Wolf Parade, Fog and WHY? also lend a certain brilliance to the setting of Yell & Ice making it one of the only remix/remake albums that I must say is well worth condoning.
